Hi there! Welcome to Her Own Health!
Who Am I?
I am Shameka, the creator of Her Own Health, and a phenomenal woman just like you. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing; I spent ten years as a bedside nurse and five years working in the healthcare technology industry. Recently, I received my Master’s in Business Administration.
I love to travel and learning!
Why Did I Start Her Own Health?
I’ve had a pretty interesting life. Here’s the abridged version: Childhood sexual abuse, a broken home, an eating disorder, multiple health issues, self-harm, deep depression, the loss of a parent at a young age, a broken marriage that ended in divorce and more. The stress and depression also caused me to gain weight, and in 2013 I topped out at 250 lbs.
It’s been a rollercoaster, but I’m still alive, and stronger than I’ve ever been. I’ve realized that I can love and take care of myself without anyone’s permission or approval. I began to figure out tactics that would help dig myself out of my rut. I explored healthy eating alternatives, dove into natural living, and found a workout I love: kickboxing! I also took on hobbies, cake decorating and plus-sized modeling. I read self-help books, went to therapy, and, eventually, I found myself. Today, I feel empowered; my confidence and self-esteem are at an all-time high, and I’m happy to be alive. Now, my mission is now to inspire woman going through similar issues in their own lives. Today, I feel empowered, and I want you to feel the same. I want you to know that self-love is not selfish. Let go of your guilt, and embrace putting yourself first for a change. Besides, if you don’t love yourself, how are you going to love or take care of anyone else?
While I am a nurse, I’m not here to give out medical advice. Ask your doctor for that! Her Own Health is a space where women can discuss health, diet, fitness, weight loss, inspirations, self-improvements, natural living and lifestyle topics together. I want to cultivate a sisterhood so that nobody feels alone, no matter what they’re going through. Together, we can discover new ways to love ourselves and work towards feeling fully empowered and healthy.
